I think it lets the flavor of the whiskey shine through nicely. Secondly, the vermouth adds a lot of additional flavor. Combine the whiskey, amaro and bitters in a cocktail mixing glass (or any other type of glass). Add in a dash of bitters and 1 maraschino cherry. Instead, you get just a slight spice, a very strong drink with the perfect layered complex approach.
